Survivor Holiday
My partner Cat and I went on holiday to Fiji and, in particular, Mana Island Resort, the island where a good chunk of the television show Survivor is shot. Here’s what we found.
Previously on Survivor Holiday - Mana Island Resort: Rising tides prevented a full-scale exploration of the east side of the island. A man wrote down our room number. And there was a hill.
Day Five
Rising tides and impassable rocks had prevented us from fully scouting the east side of the island on day four. Perhaps we were not supposed to be exploring this portion of the island? Difficult to tell, especially since the path to the other way of accessing that side of the island was blocked by a padlocked gate and a barbed wire fence. Annoying. If only there were some kind of sign to give us a clue about whether we were permitted to investigate further along this path. (And by ‘sign’, I mean, of course, a literal sign.)
But since there was no such sign, Cat and I, like any good challenge competitors, worked as a team to get over the barbed wire fence. Safely through that leg of the challenge, we moved on to the ‘stride through waist high grass’ portion of the challenge, reminding ourselves over and over that we were no longer in Australia and that this behaviour was not as snake-dangerous as our entire life had taught us to date.
Our reward? Yet another freshly cleared, yet-to-be-set-up challenge arena. Meh.

On the other hand, a little further along, there was a lovely bunch of coconuts. In fact, more than a bunch. A great big pile of them. All opened.
And then, a little further beyond the coconuts, another mown area. Oh, but what’s this at the far end of it? A platform on which one might do a challenge-concluding puzzle?
Were we allowed to climb this platform? Difficult to tell. If only there were some kind of sign. Oh, wait. There was.

The sign wasn’t entirely clear, however, so up we went. Is this the kind of platform on which we could solve a puzzle? Maybe a cryptic crossword? We both enjoy those. If only we’d thought to bring one.
And that was that. Having successfully explored all the challenge arenas, reward locations and Tribal Council sites of the resort island, there remained only one more item to check off our Survivor bucket list. Namely, a trip to the islands on which the players are actually marooned.
We try to book a boat for the next day, but are politely informed that the best way to accomplish a trip to these islands is to jet ski over there! So we book that instead.
Tomorrow, the season finale: Jet-skiing to the Survivor camps!
