LOL, too true. I feel like some old books liked to do this for some reason - carry the next sentence over to a new line with a new set of quotation marks even if the same person is continuing to speak (but sometimes it is actually a different person) :)
“But Dr. Mortimer was no doubt already stopping there?”
“No, I had been staying with a friend,” said the doctor.
“There was no possible indication³ that we intended to go to this hotel.”
I never thought about this but this does seem a tad confusing, hehe:)
