Morpheus Off The Long Run
If the final of a tournament should be a microcosm of all that came before it (and I’m not entirely sure it should be) then, fittingly enough, the final of this sodden World Cup began with a two-hour rain delay that had everybody frantically checking the reserve day rules.
Good bit. Solid gag.
Unfortunately, the unwelcome punchline to this postponed start was a dooming of any prospect of me watching the entire first innings, a tactic I’d mostly stuck to throughout the tournament. Instead, I was called upon to decide when to tap out of the first innings and head to bed. Decisions? Bleurgh.
Nevertheless, I chose the moment when India reached triple figures. Because, again, if there was any prospect of this final being a microcosm of all that came before, then there was a non-negligible chance that one hundred team runs might be enough against this South Africa side.
Here’s what I missed while I slumbered, in limerick form.
Australia run down, emphatically outbatted
South Africa fought hard, but left cruelly shattered
And history deletes
All earlier defeats
Because India triumphed in the two matches that mattered

I was actually up early for this. After the 39th over, I was about to type (as a comment on CricRocket) "Sorry, Indian fans, calling it now...it just looks like another day for the chasing team" but luckily I didn't have time, LOL:)
