In the first ODI of the series, the inexperienced West Indies top order proved no match for Megan Schutt and Kim Garth, who snared the first three wickets with just five runs on the board. Oh, and across seven overs, too.

In this way, a series of gripping bilateral challenges developed. Could the number of runs the West Indies batters were scoring outstrip the number of wickets the Australia bowlers were taking? Answer: Yes, eventually.

Once the West Indies pulled clear in that contest, they turned their sights to the next level, looking to have the number of runs they’d scored chase down the number of overs bowled to them.

Eventually, they got there, too. Of course, by this stage their innings was in tatters, on their way to being bowled out for 83.

Grim, of course. But it was hard to muster too much sympathy. Because you know what else was in tatters? My Sunday couch plans of rolling pretty much straight from the end of this women’s ODI into the beginning of the men’s match between India and Australia later that evening.
